A historical and archaeological quest
The first book of the Bible tells about the origins and wanderings of Israel’s progenitors in Mesopotamia, Canaan, and Egypt. The final chapters of Genesis tell us about the elevation of the patriarch Joseph to prime minister in the Nile Valley. Yet very few scholars today believe that these biblical stories really happened. The authors of this book have undertaken a thorough analysis of the historical and archaeological data. Starting with the chronology of the patriarchs, they have examined the archaeological, climatological, and sociological conditions and have compared them with what is written in the biblical account. This book is a revised and updated edition of the German book Volk ohne Ahnen? (2013) with additional and new arguments in favour of the historicity of the biblical account.
Pieter Gert van der Veen (PhD, habil.) is a Dutch Old Testament scholar and biblical archaeologist. He has excavated at different sites in Israel and has directed a survey on Egyptian burial finds in East Jerusalem. He is a senior lecturer of Levantine archaeology at the Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz (Germany) and has written numerous articles and books on archaeology and ancient Hebrew epigraphy. Together with American and Israeli colleagues he deciphered the famous Mount Ebal curse inscription from Shechem with the oldest known reference to Yahweh as the God of Israel. He lives with his family in southern Germany.
Uwe Zerbst (D. Sc.) is a German scientist and independent researcher. For many years he has been
actively involved with the study of the history and chronology of the ancient Near East. He is the author
of several articles and books (partly together with Pieter Gert van der Veen).
Both scholars are founding members of the international chronology Forum Bronze to Iron Age Chronology of the Ancient Near East (BICANE).
