Abstract (via DeepL)
The Bible contains the earliest historical description of the Dead Sea region as well as the “cities of the Jordan Valley,” which included Sodom and Gomorrah. The events associated with Sodom are recounted in three accounts that follow one another: 1. The parting of Abraham and Lot (Gen 13:1–13), 2. The campaign of the four kings and Abraham’s mission to rescue Lot (Gen 14:1–24), and 3. God’s visit to Abraham, the judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah, and Lot’s rescue (Gen 18:1–19:29).
These accounts are part of the historical narrative that begins with Abraham’s ancestors (starting with Gen 11:10). Taken together, they provide “report-like” information regarding the geographical location of the sites, the reason, timing, and manner of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the key figures involved. The accounts are logically interconnected and, at the time the tradition began, were fundamentally comprehensive in the sense that answers were available to all the aforementioned points—formulated as fundamental questions.
This article consists of two parts:
A) Questions and answers regarding where, when, who, why, and how.
B) The “identification” of Sodom and Gomorrah and the event of their destruction: case studies.
